Story behind the sketches (Part 5) - Yin Yang, 1974.

Yin Yang, 23 cm x 18 cm, Ink on Rough Pad paper, 1974.

It was in  1974 and I was in my final year studying at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Pulau Pinang.
Taking up a course in Humanities I decided to complete my portfolio of studies by taking some exotic subjects.  Therefore I selected subjects such as "Chinese Political and Social Philosophy", "Buddhist Sculpture in South East Asia", "European Intellectual History"  and "Aesthetics".  In studying Chinese History and Philosophy I learnt about Yin-Yang philosophy.

The Yin-Yang thought must have caught my imagination then and to remember the influence it had on me I decided to make a Chinese-style wooden stamp or 'Chop' as was popularly known among the business circles.  I had asked a Chinese Chop maker in Penang to do one for me in wood (see picture below).

Herein are examples of how the sketches are signed or stamped by my very own  personal CHOP!
