Story behind the painting (Part 18) - Two Women washing and Paddling up Kemena River, April'85.
These two paintings were done as part of a series of batik pieces to remember of the times in the 60's when I used to spend my holiday time in Sebauh. I used to see Iban ladies washing clothes and bathing by the riverside. On many occasions the scene would not be complete without the presence of families in longboat paddling up the river watching them innocently as onlookers.
These two batik pieces are of the same size i.e. 75 cm x 100 cm and represent my obsession in doing batik in the mid 80's in Bintulu. The paintings are done on cotton fabric with the aid of 'janting' and brush for the application of wax. The many tones and variety of colours are achieved by at least 7-8 dyeing process. Batik is a highly skilled art and the' cracking effects' are magical and full of surprises.
