Kelabit girls, music and dance in batik.

In the 80's I worked in batik and one of the subjects I love to do was on our Sarawak Orang Ulu Girls especially Kelabit girls.

My idea was to give due respect and recognition of their beauty, charm, their natural talent in dance, playing the 'sapeh' or the bamboo flute.

Batik was an excellent medium to portray those qualities, since batik is one form of art the encourages experimentation, harmony in tones and accidental surprises.

I share here four examples of the batik paintings on cloth on the subject of Kelabit girls, music and dance.
